CREATING JOBS!!
This is a serious area of concern for the organization. The Executive Committee did some research on the subject and found that according to the 2010 U. S. Census Bureau report, the population of Jasper dropped from 8,247 to 7,590; a population decrease of about -7.9%. Another interesting U. S. Census Bureau statistic is that the current unemployment rate in Jasper, Texas (as of January 2017) is 7.9%; in the state of Texas it is 4.2%; the national average is 4.9%. Present day economists recognizes that an unemployment rate hovering around 4% of the workforce is considered to be full employment. This is a lot of information to absorb and understand, but, it can definitely be understood that Jasper, Texas has an unemployment problem and it is concentrated within the minority communities.
Creating jobs by the organization is a work in progress. The Lone Star Youth Council, Inc. has created a "Think Tank" of knowledgeable personnel to address this problem. "Think Tank" personnel are meeting on a monthly basis to distribute ideas and if something makes sense, it will be acted on. Currently, an idea in motion is to create a community agricultural co-op to address the lack of fresh vegetables in Jasper County food deserts. In addition to the concerns of fresh vegetable supply in the Jasper County food deserts, the co-op will address another concern within the county in the form of - JOBS! The first step is to execute a demonstration project that will begin in the month of February 2017. The success of the demonstration project will dictate what comes next; stay tuned.
